Let's Tear Off Those Labels!

Every year, as we move into Autumn, I notice a big surge of enquiries from people who are desperate for help, having already tried a number of other routes, including medication and different forms of therapy. As is often the case, they see hypnotherapy as the last resort. I’ve listened to stories from people of all ages who have experienced a massive increase in their levels of fear and anxiety since the pandemic and subsequent lockdown.

The healthcare ‘experts’ seem very keen to invent smart names for these fears, handing them out to people like labels that they’re encouraged to attach to themselves, just like you’d stick a label on a bottle. The labelled person researches the symptoms of their disorder and consequently becomes even more fearful, because they start to believe themselves to be whatever is written on that label

So let me be clear about what I’m saying: these are just labels that are playing tricks on your mind by making you feel that there is something wrong with you, and your problems are too difficult to be resolved. They are just ‘labels’ and they are certainly not you! 

Imagine you have a bottle of high-quality multi-vitamins. Now imagine sticking a new label on that bottle that says ‘Poison’. With that poison label on the bottle, nobody would dare to use the multi-vitamins. They are ruined and useless because of a bad label. 

Get it?  Once you allow labels to be stuck on you, you are merely acting out what is written on that label!

What I’m suggesting you do is to rip off the label that you’ve stuck on yourself. Right now.You don’t need it and it won’t help you.

The only thing wrong with you is that you have an out-of-date negative feeling you have responded to by creating some unhealthy habits or behaviours.  You can now see your issues for what they are: a collection of symptoms caused by your inner fears. 

Now you realise this, you can breathe a huge sigh of relief and begin to downsize your fear into something that is much more manageable!  Whatever you’ve tried in the past hasn’t worked, so it’s time to find another route.
